My kids can spend hours playing with Playdoh, I admit I like to make shapes and join in on the fun with them. We have had one to many clumps of Playdoh end up mashed into the carpet. I came up with the idea of using a "splat mat" (that was really for use under a high chair) and spreading that out on the kitchen floor for them to keep the playdoh off the carpet. Perhaps a heavy duty shower curtain might work well also, we even used an old Twister Mat for more play space.
When it comes to markers, go with the washable ones. We had a section of the wall in our living room my kids thought would be a perfect "canvas" for their art work. It was colorful, but did not look to attractive to guest I'm sure! I was able to wipe it off now and then, but eventually had to repaint the wall. I did explain to them not to write on the wall, but you know when you aren't looking, they're going to do it. It's OK to let them be creative, but on paper would be better, right!
