Giveaway: News-O-Matic Daily Newspaper app for kids goodie bag

Disclosure: I was given a News-O-Matic goodie bag in order to write this review. The comments and views are my own.

The Past few months have been full of natural and man made news that is not so easy for our kids to understand. We may shelter them from the TV and radio news so they aren't confused or scared by these events, yet we don't want them to hear about events from friends or even passerby.

For news of good or bad, News-O-Matic lets kids 7-10 years of age read about events and newsworthy happenings in a way they can relate. It also gives them good reading skills, knowledge of current events, and topics to converse about with family around the dinner table.

Each issue has five stories and includes games, puzzles, maps to show location of stories, timeline of history and images and videos. Kids can visit the "newsroom" to ask or draw questions related to the stories. Each issue is ad free.

It's fun for the kids to read each day and be able to talk about news with them. They look forward to reading the news and are learning global as well as country news. Just download the app and let the kids have their own "newspaper" on the go or on the couch at home. Don't be surprised if you find yourself reading it also.

News-O-Matic is an educational news app that covers breaking news, sports, science and much more in an accessible and kid-friendly way.

available for the iPad or iPad Mini in the Apple App Store

News-O-Matic gives children the opportunity to explore the latest current events through the app, while also giving them a voice to express their views. Children can interact with the Editor-in-Chief by rating stories, drawing pictures, asking questions or expressing opinions about current topics in the “News Room” section of the app.

tips from Dr. Phyllis Ohr, Child Psychologist for Press4Kids, on how parents can address news issues with children and what children can do to feel better:

1. When the event does not personally affect the child, reassure them that everything is okay with the people they love and that nothing has changed for them.

2. Be sure to stress to children that if they do have questions to ask parents, teachers as well as friends. Other children having the same feelings may be comforting.

3. Begin by giving the child a brief synopsis of what happened by using age appropriate language. Ask if there is something they want to know more about or if they need something explained further. If so, stick to pointedly answering their question or clarifying. Do not add on or digress.

4. Do not assume the news will make children feel a certain way. Ask if they know how they feel, but stress that kids feel all different ways when they hear important news and sometimes do not know how they feel or do not feel anything which is okay. However, if children are affected by it, it is their own feeling. Reassure children that no matter what they are feeling, their feelings are okay.

5. If they are upset but don't want to talk, suggest a fun activity for distraction or help them use calming skills like playing, drawing a picture or writing a story. These activities help release any upset feelings and make children feel better.

"After Earth" screening review. Opens in theaters tomorrow 5/31

Disclosure: I attended this screening with a media pass. The comments and views are my own.

Wednesday night I went to an advanced screening to see the film "After Earth" staring Will Smith and his son Jaden Smith. As in real life, in the movie they are father and son.

First of all- the thought of "After Earth" is a bit scary-right. In the film they crash land on "Earth" but it is not earth as we know it now. It's only animals, people are not there-here.  Cypher (Wil Smith) is the General and his son Kitai Raige  (Jaden Smith) is training to be a ranger.

There are some parts of the film that are startling. I saw a few people including myself do one of those yikes moments caught off guard a few times during the film. watch the trailer below to see a bit of the film.

The film has a great story of Father/Son relationships, but the part I took most out of the movie was how Kitai's dad tells him about fear and danger. Fear is not real, it is not here, but danger is. Kitai has to overcome fear in order to save his father and self after the aircraft they are traveling in crashes onto earth. Perhaps we all should heed that lesson-and not let fear be a part of our lives.

The film opens Friday May 31, 2013, It's a hot weekend so go cool off at the theater. It's also near Father's day, take your Dad to see the film.

Kitai Raige (Jaden Smith) is training to be a great Ranger like his father Cypher (Will Smith). He has immense talent and skill, but his strained relationship with his father has also left him reckless and angry. When a crash landing leaves Kitai and a wounded Cypher stranded on Earth, 1,000 years after events forced humanity's escape, father and son must learn to listen and to trust one another in order to survive and signal for help.

Cast:Will Smith, Jaden Smith, Zoe Kravitz, Isabelle Fuhrman

Release Date:
5/31/2013

Rating: PG-13

Running Time: 100 m minutes

Disclousre: I was sent free coupons from  Koru Dairy. The comments and views are my own.

I am just back from the grocery store with my youngest. Both my girls are at the age where they can cook and clean. I see the cooking in action everyday-cleaning not so much. We unloaded the cotton reusable bags-I like to be able to run them through the washer from time to time.

The girls are stocked up on fresh fruits, Salmon, and whatever else was on the two lists-one from each girl.  We also came home with Koru™ Yoghurt. I was glad to finally find this at Shop Rite.
Someone already depleted the stock in the fridge while I was typing this post. I'll be adding Koru™ Yoghurt to our weekly list (s).

What is Koru? It is creamery style Yoghurt. yes, there is an h in yoghurt.  This yoghurt is making it's way into grocery stores on the East Coast currently.  Koru is a silky smooth yoghurt, made with real ingredients like Grade A skin milk, cream, and fruit. It comes in a see-through container so you can see the fruit and creamery style yoghurt inside.

New video clip: Monsters University - It All Began Here

MONSTERS UNIVERSITY releases in theaters on June 21, get your sneak peak right now:

about the movie:

Ever since college-bound Mike Wazowski (voice of Billy Crystal) was a little monster, he has dreamed of becoming a Scarer—and he knows better than anyone that the best Scarers come from Monsters University (MU). But during his first semester at MU, Mike’s plans are derailed when he crosses paths with hotshot James P. Sullivan, “Sulley” (voice of John Goodman), a natural-born Scarer. The pair’s out-of-control competitive spirit gets them both kicked out of the University’s elite Scare Program. To make matters worse, they realize they will have to work together, along with an odd bunch of misfit monsters, if they ever hope to make things right.

Screaming with laughter and oozing with heart, Disney•Pixar’s “Monsters University” is directed by Dan Scanlon (“Cars,” “Mater and the Ghostlight,” “Tracy”), produced by Kori Rae (“Up,” “The Incredibles,” “Monsters, Inc.”) and features music from Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee and award-winning composer Randy Newman (“Monsters, Inc.,” “Toy Story 3”). The film opens in U.S. theaters on June 21, 2013, and will be shown in 3D in select theaters.

Did you notice that Chick-fil-A® has new salads? Want to know what's in them?

Did you notice that Chick-fil-A® has new salads? Three to be exact, and the side salad is new too, so that makes four.  I was invited to a blogger lunch at Chick-fil-A®  in Exton, Pennsylvania to try all three new salads. Of course we did not eat all three salads at once, but sampling them was delicious and we all brought leftovers home. I am not sure who ate the leftover salads at my house, but they were eaten the same day.

The new salads are packed, honestly packed with so many fresh ingredients. All chopped, cut and prepared fresh daily.  We got a behind the scenes look at how the salads are made, and it looks like a salad bar almost. One nice woman was making all the salads for the day.

Back to our salad tasting:

Salad #1 Chick-fil-A® Grilled Market Salad: Grilled chicken breast served on a fresh bed of chopped greens, carrots, red cabbage, blue cheese, apples, strawberries, blueberries, and served with Harvest Nut Granola, Roasted Nut Blend, and a zesty Apple Cider Vinaigrette or your choice of dressing.

this salad is my favorite-in fact I brought one home for dinner tonight since I was out doing errands and the family is running here and there.

Salad #2 Chick-fil-A® Asian Salad: Chick-fil-A Nuggets, sliced and served hot on greens, shredded red cabbage, carrots, Mandarin oranges, Honey Thai Almonds, Chinese Garlic and Ginger won tons, and Honey Sesame Dressing or your choice of dressing.

I like the warm Chick-fil-A®  nugget on the salad, and this one was full of so many different flavors.

Salad #3 Chick-fil-A® Cobb Salad: this salad has warm nuggets on bed of fresh greens, red cabbage, carrots, roasted corn kernels, blend of shredded Monterrey Jack and Cheddar Cheeses, crumbled bacon, diced eggs, grape tomatoes, charred tomato crispy red bell peppers and Avocado Lime Ranch dressing or you choice of dressing.

I am not a fan of bacon or eggs, I know can you imagine, but this one was really good.I was surprised I liked it. It had a nice smokey flavor, and I liked the roasted corn kernels with the other ingredients.

We did not sample the side salad, but this a favorite of my husbands. It has greens, red cabbage, carrots, cheese, tomatoes, dressing. and charred tomato crispy red bell peppers.

Are you ready to try one of the new salads from Chick-fil-A®? ( just for your info, they have chocolate chip cookies that are um, really good too, and new  ice dream sundaes)

www.cfarestaurant.com/lionville is in Exton Pennsylvania.
for the month of May buy any catering tray and receive one of their new salads or wraps FREE. call 610-594-2070 to order your tray.

It's a boat, It's a duck, it's Tuckerton Seaport flying high with the traditions of Barnegat Bay in New Jersey

Sunday morning we headed east to Tuckerton, New Jersey to attend a Bluegrass  and BBQ. Even though we are New Jersey residents, we had not been to Tuckerton before. What were we waiting for? This place is beyond cool.

Upon arriving we meet fellow bloggers in the Hunting Shanty, also known as Barnegat Bay Decoy  Museum  This shanty is full of hand carved duck decoys and history of duck hunting.

Next we all headed over to the visitor's center which houses the gift shop. We trekked down the steps for Todd's Musical Petting Zoo where kids and parents could play musical instruments. There were craft tables and Adventure Aquarium and Watershed Ambassadors and a few other information booths.
Yes I know that is a lot of ands.
We had so much fun with the instruments, and visiting the tables of the environmental groups.

After that we walked around outside, listened to bluegrass music, ate BBQ lunch, and meet back up as a group for our tour.

We learned about the seaport, the lighthouse, the Surf Museum, played miniature golf, learned about ship building, and it's a boat, it's a duck- duck boat. The duck boats are sneak boats for duck hunting. They are made to float in low waters and be really quiet.

The Seaport is home to New Jersey Surf Museum. Fisherman would clam in the morning in Barnegat Bay and then surf in the afternoon in the ocean.  They even used Mom's ironing board as a surf board.

                                                    Sneak Boat for duck hunting

Next up was duck magnet making and a trip to the gift shop.

Michael Bublé sings classic American songs and songs he wrote on his new CD "To Be Loved"

Michael Bublé CD  features classic American Songs, and songs written by himself.  I keep my CD in the car so when I am kid free I can listen to it in peace and quiet. It's also perfect for romantic dinners, quiet time on your porch, or even cleaning the house, because that has to get done too.

Everyone's favorite Canadian is  back again, finding his harmony while making his way through the American songbook with the first track on his new CD being "You Make Me Feel So Young" my favorite on this CD.

Did you watch the video? How do you like the song?
It's a happy song, and he sings it perfectly. He also sings "Something Stupid" featuring Reese Witherspoon and "After All" featuring Bryan Adams

"I want to take you on a wonderful journey about love—all different kinds of love," Michael says. "The album swings big time: it rocks, it’s soulful, it’s happy, sometimes a little sad. It’s romantic, it’s yummy, and it’s heartfelt."

Songs he wrote on this CD:

These are good times for the singer, who is about to become a first-time dad. He sounds like a man in love with life. "I wrote Close Your Eyes about my wife and about the power of all the women in my life—my sisters, my mom, my grandma and all women in general. Let’s face it, where would we be without them? I Got It Easy, another original, is basically a song where I count my blessings and is a reminder to me and everyone to appreciate all the good parts of life. I’m a very lucky guy and I never want to forget it."

To Be Loved, out now, finds the Grammy winner covering songs by Frank Sinatra, the Bee Gees, Jackson 5, Elvis Presley, Van Morrison, and more. In the mix of golden standards are four original songs co-written by Bublé, dipping into his personal life for inspiration.

you can purchase his new CD on  itunes https://itunes.apple.com/album/to-be-loved/id605526405  or from Amazon . The CD is now is stores also.

To Be Loved Track Listing:

1. "You Make Me Feel So Young"

2. "It's a Beautiful Day"

3. "To Love Somebody"

4. "Who's Lovin You"

5. "Something Stupid" (featuring Reese Witherspoon)

6. "Come Dance with Me"

7. "Close Your Eyes"

8. "After All" (featuring Bryan Adams)

9. "Have I Told You Lately That I Love You" (with Naturally 7)

Spending the morning with Krispy Kreme® Doughnuts. Well, someone had to do it...

Can you smell these Krispy Kreme® Doughnuts?  I am glad to share that they are opening more locations on the East Coast!!!

This morning I was invited to a Blogger Brunch at the new Havertown, Pennsylvania location on West Chester Pike.  We were treated to samples of a variety of their fresh bakery treats, and the new Key Lime variety. That was my favorite.

Right now they have a Key Lime Staycation sweepstakes going on until May 18, 2012. go to KeyLimeStaycation.com for all the details.  You can also follow the Krispy Kreme Cruiser® as it travels all over the USA. Visit Krispy Kreme Cruiser to see where they are headed next.

Did you know you can fund raise with Krispy Kreme Philly? Let them help you raise some dough for your  organization.  krispykremephilly.com

There are 3 ways to raise funds with Krispy Kreme® Doughnut Sales:

Fundraising Certificates-each certificate is redeemable for one dozen Original Glazed

Partnership Cards-with the purchase of the card you can received one dozen Original® glazed doughnuts Free when you purchase any dozen doughnuts.

Doughnut Sales-sell doughnuts at your event. Minimum of 25 dozen to get the fundraising price and you sell for a profit. Choice of Original® Glazed or Chocolate Iced Dozen, Glazed Filled Dozen.

At the Blogger Brunch we learned about the history of Krispy Kreme®. Who started Krispy Kreme?  Glad you asked, Vernon Rudolph did. He bought a secret yeast raised doughnut recipe from a French chef from New Orleans.  He set up his shop in a rented building and began selling them in 1937 to local grocery stores.  People began stopping by his building and asked to buy the hot doughnuts, and he began selling the doughnuts directly to customers from his building.

In 1973 he passed away and the companies growth slowed and was reorganized for sale to Beatrice Foods company in 1976. In 1982 a small group of associates, their early franchisees, bought Krispy Kreme® back and began to expand.  They now have 646 locations world wide and in 21 different countries. That's comfort food away from home!

Krispy Kreme® Philly is planning to open about 21 stores in Philadelphia and the surrounding counties in the next few years.  Aren't you happy about that? I am!  Here is something else to be happy about, Krispy Kreme® Philly doughnuts are nut free, trans fat free, and they are Kosher certified. They even have a nutritional book available in stores if you want to have a read.

My thoughts on the blogger brunch:

It was nice to meet up with bloggers I knew, and some I knew from blogging groups but had not met before.

The store is new, clean and has a steady stream of customers.

The event coordinators were extremely friendly, hospitable, and knowledgeable.

The associates of the store were friendly, polite, and hard working. They let us take photos and brought us samples of tasty products from Krispy Kreme®.

(this is only my second Vine post, but it was fun to watch them making doughnuts)

Upon our departure we were given a fresh hot dozen Original® Glazed Doughnuts to take home to our families.  Good thing we can roll up the car windows or cars would have followed us all home.

We were also given some great "swag" A shirt and coffee mug to remember our fun tasty day.

I know, now we all want to buy Krispy Kreme ® Doughnuts. Look for a location near you!
