Fun Frugal Finds for Friday: Holiday bobble friends

I found these fun holiday characters at Dollar Tree. My friendly neighbor has a yellow hula girl on her dashboard that she told me she got at Dollar Tree, I went there to find some a while ago and they were sold out. Last week I took my daughter to Dollar Tree to get some decorations for her dorm room and I found these! Needless to say I was pretty happy to find them. I keep mine on the window sill above the sink. When the sun hits their solar panel they dance. It is too much funniness!

Here is a short video to see them in action -our nosey cat had to jump in the end, but you can see how the holiday characters dance:

These are great for stocking stuffers or just to give for fun. Look for these at Dollar Tree, I found them on a display table right when you walk in the door.

Young Readers have a new companion book for the movie Lincoln, wrap one up for Christmas

Almost 150 years after the death of Abraham Lincoln, the fascination with our 16th President is stronger than ever. This November, Steven Spielberg brings us and outstanding feature film simply called Lincoln, a revealing dram that focuses on Lincoln's final months in office as he pursues a course of action to end the Civil War, re-unite the country and abolish slavery.

To accompany the movie, the film’s producers invited Harold Holzer, noted historian and the author of dozens of books on Lincoln and the Civil War-- who also served as a consultant on the movie--to write a new book especially for young readers that could become one of the official tie-ins to the movie. The result is --Lincoln: How Abraham Lincoln Ended Slavery in America, A Companion Book for Young Readers to the Steven Spielberg Film Lincoln (November 20, 2012; Newmarket Press for It Books, an imprint of HarperCollins; 9780062265098; $16.99; 224 pages; hardcover), by Harold Holzer.

Prompted by the focus of the Spielberg film, Holzer applied his clear, compelling writing style and deep knowledge of his subject to tell the Lincoln story through a new portal -- how Lincoln came to his views on slavery, and how he maneuvered to end it. By so doing, he makes an important passage in American history come alive for readers of all ages.

After a preface recounting his experience as a consultant with Spielberg and screenwriter Tony Kushner, Holzer starts his newest Lincoln book on January 31, 1865 —less than three months before the president is assassinated—when he is anxiously awaiting word whether or not Congress will finally vote to pass the 13th Amendment to the Constitution. Though the Emancipation Proclamation two years earlier had authorized the army to liberate slaves in Confederate territory, only a Constitutional amendment passed by Congress and ratified by three-fourths of the states, would end it legally everywhere in the country.

Drawing from letters, speeches, memoirs, and documents by Lincoln and others, Holzer covers Lincoln’s boyhood, his moves from Kentucky to Indiana to Illinois, his work as a lawyer and congressman, his unsuccessful candidacies for the U.S. Senate and his victory in two Presidential elections, his arduous duties in the Civil War as Commander-in-Chief, his actions as President, and his relationships with family, political rivals, and associates.

Fast-paced and riveting, filled with detail and incident, Holzer’s book provides a fresh view of America in those turbulent times, as well as fascinating insights into the life and actions of one of our greatest Presidents and the constant challenges he faced as he weighed his personal beliefs against his presidential duties in relation to the slavery issue. The passage of the 13th Amendment would become the crowing achievement of Abraham Lincoln's life, and the undisputed testament to his political genius.

Harold Holzer's Lincoln also includes 30 archival photographs, a brief chronology, historical character list, text of several Lincoln writings, bibliography, and end notes.

HAROLD HOLZER is one of the country’s leading authorities on Abraham Lincoln and the political culture of the Civil War era. A prolific writer and lecturer, and frequent guest on television, Holzer served as a Content Consultant to the Steven Spielberg film Lincoln. He is chairman of The Lincoln Bicentennial Foundation, successor organization to the U. S. Abraham Lincoln Bicentennial Commission (ALBC), to which he was appointed by President Clinton in 2000, and co-chaired from 2001-2010. President Bush, in turn, awarded Holzer the National Humanities Medal in 2008.

He has authored, co-authored, and edited forty-two previous books, including Emancipating Lincoln: The Emancipation Proclamation in Text, Context, and Memory and Lincoln at Cooper Union: the Speech That Made Abraham Lincoln President, which won a coveted second-place Lincoln Prize, the most prestigious award in the field.

He is the author of three award-winning books written especially for young readers: Father Abraham: Lincoln and His Sons, named a National Council of Teachers of English Orbis Pictus Honor Book; The President is Shot!, chosen as a Notable book by the Children’s Book Council and Voice of Youth Advocates; and Abraham Lincoln, The Writer which was named to the Children’s Literature Choice List and as a “Best Book of the Year” by the Bank Street College of Education. He lives in New York.

The DreamWorks Pictures/Twentieth Century Fox film, “Lincoln”, is directed by Steven Spielberg, produced by Steven Spielberg and Kathleen Kennedy, with a screenplay by Tony Kushner, based in part on the book ‘Team of Rivals: The Political Genius of Abraham Lincoln’ by Doris Kearns Goodwin.

AI duPont Hospital for Children is expanding it's hospital with families in mind

I spent a special morning learning about Alfred I duPont Hospital for Children in Wilmington Delaware. It was a special morning because I got to go back to an area I was familiar with since living in south Jersey years ago. We spent most of our time in the Wilmington area and it was nice to go back and visit. There was road construction going on, so I was glad to know the area.

It was also a special morning because I knew of Alfred I duPont and the Hospital for Children when we lived in that area, but I did not know of the amazing amount of work, talent, skills, and compassion going into the new hospital for children. We meet a few of the caring, devoted people working on this expansion and at Nemours.  If you have, had or know of someone with an ill child you truly will  appreciate the time and talent given to this expansion. and what about the doctors? They have 152 Nemours Physicians named to the Best Doctors in America 2011-2012.

On the tour we viewed model patient rooms. Amazing. These rooms are so well thought out and planned with the child and family in mind.  The rooms are neutral colors, roomy, offer a spacious bathroom, a couch, a table and chairs, a locking closet so Mom can put her purse in there and not have to lug it around all day or for other personal things, two televisions. Yes, two. One for the patient and one for the family to watch in the area where the couch and table and chairs are, a small refrigerator, shelves, outlets to charge your gadgets and a sink by the patients bed area for hand washing. Parents, families, and patients all had input on the design of these rooms. A Parent Advisory committee was formed even before plans were drawn to get their input on the design.

I  took an Environmental Psychology class in college and the layout and use of the room would be a great lecture for that class. Asking what and why patients and families want and need in a hospital room is paramount. And they did that.

Each room has a communication board so you will know who to contact with your questions. Families are also given access to their child's medical information for up to date details through the hospital's network.

The Nemours/Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children is a 200 bed Hospital located on the grounds of the Nemours Estate in Wilmington Delaware. It is a full service, acute care children's hospital. The only one of it's kind in the Delaware Valley. The completion date is set for 2014.

Highlights of this expansion of the Children's Hospital:
larger, technologically advanced single patient rooms
a new, expanded Emergency Department (from 29 to 44 bays)
family centered services, spaces, and amenities available in a peaceful, therapeutic environment with nature trails, water features, and healing gardens.
a five story atrium entrance filled with natural sunlight, recreation spaces and surrounding gardens
188 underground parking spaces.
a centralized, rooftop helipad providing easy access to the hospital with minimal exposure to outdoor elements.

It's National Diabetes Month and a perfect time to try UNREAL Candy

There are currently 26 Million Americans living with diabetes and since November is National Diabetes Month it's a great time to make simple lifestyle changes to optimize your own health. I like to have a piece of chocolate candy once in a while, well, more than I should.  UNREAL offers five delicious chocolate coated candies with less sugar, more protein and more fiber than leading brands.

I can tell you that this candy is good. I have tried it, I have bought it, and I have a bag of the Candy Coated Peanuts in my pantry right now.  I think my kids have found it and have been snacking on it also. It is that good. Kids love it, Parents love it and are glad for less sugar in our diets. Tuck a few bars in your family's Christmas Stockings this year!

UNREAL is the brainchild of Nicky Bronner, a 15 year old candy lover who embarked on a mission to prove that candy can be unjunked. “Why does the food we love the most have to contain ingredients we prefer to avoid?” questioned Nicky. Leading up to launch, Nicky studied health issues, including diabetes, which ultimately inspired him to create a brand that could “unjunk food.”

Unlike typical candy bars, UNREAL candies can proudly claim:
  • No corn syrup
  • No hydrogenated oil
  • No artificial flavors
  • No GMO’s
  • No synthetic colors
  • Responsibly sourced ingredients, including:
    • Traceable cacao beans from Ghana and Ecuador
    • 100% sustainable and organic Palm Kernel Oil sourced from a sustainable and organic plantation in Brazil

The songs are produced by Zack Odom and Kenneth Mount known as ZK Productions whose credits include Cartel, Mayday Parade, All Time Low and the Ready Set.

Skuller describes his sound as ‘vintage-pop’ with a mixture of classic rock-and-roll. “You hear pop in the lyrics, like a Beatles kind of pop, and then the melodies go from 50’s influences to The Black Keys.”

Coppertone Water Moms are cool even on the hotest days of Summer

Last Spring I joined fellow Mom Bloggers on becoming a Coppertone Water Mom. It was the time of year when flowers were emerging from the cold earth, kids were playing outside more often, and seasonal pools were getting ready for patrons arrival on Memorial Day weekend. I spent many of Summers at the borough pool in my small town from the time it opened to the time it closed in the early evening. My sister and I even took Red Cross Swimming Lessons and got jobs at the pool. We are redheads with fair skin. One word-Sunburn.

My children are red heads and have fair skin. I remember picking up a sample packet of Coppertone Water Babies at our Pediatrician. We have stayed with Coppertone in different formulas, sprays, and creams.

Its is great to be a Coppertone Water Mom, we can talk about the sunshine, the rain, and which products are our favorites. Even though it is November and very close to Thanksgiving Sunscreen use is still needed. Protect your scalp with a hat, protect your exposed skin with sunscreen even in November.

Coppertone Moms were sent an awesome package of full size products. samples, a tote bag, water bottle, beach ball and other fun things for us to use all Summer long. I shared the samples with my neighbors, relatives, and friends at our Summer cottage where there is a sunny meadow and creek.

At the end of the Summer we were sent a wonderful surprise from Coppertone Water Moms!  A mesh tote bag, sand pail, t-shirt,beach towel, balloons, and a pile of the iconic Coppertone girl temporary tattoos to hand out.  It's been a really fun year full of interacting with other Coppertone Moms, sharing Coppertone products, and staying safe in the sunshine.

Remember to keep your skin healthy and use a sunscreen and moisturize, from sun up to sun down. even on those early evening boardwalk nights.

As a member of the Coppertone® Water MOMS group, I received product samples and promotional items to share and use as I see fit. No monetary compensation has taken place and any opinions expressed by me are honest and reflect my actual experience.

Ahh, my aching feet. Try Footminders for relief.

Do your feet ever hurt? All the time? Some of the time? My do. I've tried a few brands of shoe inserts to cushion my heel or help with arch support. Just a lot of walking can make your feet hurt or standing all day can put stress on your back and feet.

Footminders Orthoitic Insoles correct excessive pronation-that is rolling in of the foot and lowering of your arches. Footminders also provide relief from heel pain-plantar Fasciitis, Achilles Tendonitis and Metatarsalgia-ball of foot pain.

Foot minders have a dual layer of advance technology to provide cushioning and bio-mechanical support and re-alignment of your feet.

My husband tried out the comfort orthotics and was pleased with the wear and quality. You need to trim the insole to the size of your shoe, place it in your shoe and then off you go.
If you are in the market for new insoles take a look at the three models Footminders offers to find the one that best fits your need.

Choose from 3 models, based on the types of shoes to be worn with them:

  • Comfort: Designed for lace-up shoes, athletic footwear, work boots and hiking boots

If you are in the market for new insoles take a look at the three models Footminders offers to find the one that best fits your need.

Choose from 3 models, based on the types of shoes to be worn with them:
