When Calls The Heart Season 1 DVD GIVEAWAY, and watch the new Season Premier trailer.

When Calls The Heart Season Premier is on Saturday April 25, 2015.
Tune into Hallmark Channel for the two hour event. It's a good one!

I have watched the season premier for this post, i
t's the first I have seen this show, and I'm hooked.

In the season premier,
Elizabeth Thatcher (Erin Krakow) is faced with new thoughts of staying in Coal Valley, or returning to her Thatcher family home in the city. She returns home due to her mother being ill and is reacquainted with her sisters and an old friend.  Constable Jack Thornton (Daniel Lissing) accompanies her on the trip to visit with his brother.

Abigail Stanton (Lori Loughlin) is keeping the cafe running and becoming fond of Mr. Avery as well.

Coal Valley is trying to recover from the mine explosion and the death of so many of the men. There is a trial to hold the company accountable for the safety of the mine.

The setting of Coal Valley is a mining town, the costumes are beautiful, the men are strong, and the women are hard working. It's a simple life, but not without problems.

There is glamour in Elizabeth's life with her family wealth, yet she chooses to be a teacher in Coal Valley. Tune in April 25 to see the season premier and what's new in Coal Valley.

About the series:
The series is inspired by Janette Oke’s bestselling book series about the Canadian West. “When Calls the Heart” tells the captivating story of Elizabeth Thatcher (Erin Krakow), a young teacher accustomed to her high society life, who receives her first classroom assignment in Coal Valley, a small coal mining town where life is simple, but often fraught with challenges. Lori Loughlin plays Abigail Stanton, a wife and mother whose husband, the foreman of the mine, along with a dozen other miners, has just been killed in an explosion. The newly widowed women find their faith is tested when they must go to work in the mines to keep a roof over their heads. Elizabeth charms most everyone in Coal Valley, except Constable Jack Thornton (Daniel Lissing) who believes Thatcher’s wealthy father has doomed the lawman’s career by insisting he be assigned in town to protect the shipping magnate’s daughter. Living in a turn of the century coal town, Elizabeth will have to learn the ways of the frontier if she wishes to thrive in the rural west on her own.

La Fille Mal Gardee – from the Royal Opera House London
Frederick Ashton's final full-length ballet is one of his most joyous creations, inspired by his love for the Suffolk countryside. It is based on an 1828 French ballet and the music was adapted by John Lanchbery from Ferdinand Hérold's original score. La Fille mal gardée was a resounding success on its premiere in 1960 and has remained a firm favourite in The Royal Ballet's repertory. The title translates as 'The Wayward Daughter'. La Fille displays some of Ashton's most virtuosic choreography – the youthful passion of Lise and her lover, Colas, is expressed in a series of energetic pas de deux. The ballet is laced with good humour and a whirl of dancing chickens, grouchy guardians and halfwit suitors take to the stage. Ashton affectionately incorporated elements of national folk dance into his choreography, from a Lancashire clog dance to a maypole dance, making La Fille mal gardée (despite its title) The Royal Ballet's most emphatically English work. Osbert Lancaster's colourful designs reinforce the robust wit of the production.

What's the idea behind antioxidants in our food?

What is an antioxidant?
Sounds like something to go against oxidation right? That is right!
Antioxidants in our bodies help protect our cells.
Antioxidants in our food protect oils from becoming rancid or rotten and help keep bread, cookies, crackers, and other packaged foods fresh and tasty.

The job of antioxidants in food is for:
  • Taste
  • Freshness
  • Safety
  • Keep natural food color
  • Food waste reduction
Do you look for labels that state Preservative free? Antioxidants are a type of preservative and can occur naturally or synthetically. So, maybe it's not really preservative free??? Like an orange has antioxidants.

This is a fun video to watch-it's quick.
Pay attention, this guy talks fast. I mean fast, but you can watch it again. It's a perfect info video on antioxidants. Now you know.

So, how can we keep our food fresh and safe to eat?
Refrigeration, canning, freezing, and antioxidants.
There are naturally occurring antioxidants in food and also synthetic antioxidants.

Examples of natural antioxidants:
Vitamin E is found in leafy green vegetables, so is Alpha-tocoperol, (that's Vitamin E's fancy name).
Vitamin C is found in citrus, so is Ascorbic Acid (that's Vitamin C's fancy name).

When you read the ingredient list on the food package and see scientific words, they could be natural or man made. Don't let those big words scare you off.

Examples of man made antioxidants:
BHT-added to grains based foods like cookies to help maintain freshness
TBHQ-tasteless, colorless, and added to vegetable oils, foods that are fried, and other packaged food. These are used instead natural antioxidants so your crackers don't taste like oranges if Vitamin C was used as a antioxidant.

Although these are synthetic, the compound sources are sometiomes found in nature to make these antioxidants.
These compounds have been in use for 60 years in the food industry and must be food grade, as referenced by the FDA.

As part of a balanced diet, natural and man made antioxidants are safe for your food and body, helping to maintain taste and freshness of your food.

Review of The Good Book DVD. A silent film with a loud message of faith.

The Good Book DVD opens with Daniel lighting a candle to read from his Bible before going to bed. He lights the match and then throws it in the trash can. After his reading he goes to bed. While the family is sleeping the house catches on fire from that match.

He runs away from the house as it is burning, feeling shame. He seeks food and clothing from picnics and clothes lines. He finds a community living in the woods and resides with them for a time.

A church group brings the forest community food and Bibles. One of the Bibles is given to Daniel from one of his friends. The Bible has one verse underlined. When Daniel is reunited with his family he passes the Bible onto the man that found his family.

The man that helped Daniel find his family has a newborn of his own. The baby is not well and passes away. After time, the family adopts a baby. The father leaves the Bible on a sidewalk ledge where a homeless woman picks it up and reads the words. She finds her way to church, that leads to a parishioner helping her find a job.

Each story of the film is someone who needs healing. They find healing through the words of the Bible, the church, and people they encounter along the way. The Bible might be passed along to someone hand to hand, or found along the street, or even in a stolen purse.

Wherever the Bible travels it endures water and fire elements.
It survives for you and me.

The film is silent except for some calm background music that sets the scenes. Don't miss the end of the film for a bit of background on the creators of the film and a testimony of a man in trouble and how he found Bibles to read.

Visit their Facebook and The Good Book web site for more on the film.

Disclosure: I was sent a limited pre-release copy of The Good Book for this review. The comments and views are my own.
