I spent a special morning learning about Alfred I duPont Hospital for Children in Wilmington Delaware. It was a special morning because I got to go back to an area I was familiar with since living in south Jersey years ago. We spent most of our time in the Wilmington area and it was nice to go back and visit. There was road construction going on, so I was glad to know the area.
It was also a special morning because I knew of Alfred I duPont and the Hospital for Children when we lived in that area, but I did not know of the amazing amount of work, talent, skills, and compassion going into the new hospital for children. We meet a few of the caring, devoted people working on this expansion and at Nemours. If you have, had or know of someone with an ill child you truly will appreciate the time and talent given to this expansion. and what about the doctors? They have 152 Nemours Physicians named to the Best Doctors in America 2011-2012.
On the tour we viewed model patient rooms. Amazing. These rooms are so well thought out and planned with the child and family in mind. The rooms are neutral colors, roomy, offer a spacious bathroom, a couch, a table and chairs, a locking closet so Mom can put her purse in there and not have to lug it around all day or for other personal things, two televisions. Yes, two. One for the patient and one for the family to watch in the area where the couch and table and chairs are, a small refrigerator, shelves, outlets to charge your gadgets and a sink by the patients bed area for hand washing. Parents, families, and patients all had input on the design of these rooms. A Parent Advisory committee was formed even before plans were drawn to get their input on the design.
I took an Environmental Psychology class in college and the layout and use of the room would be a great lecture for that class. Asking what and why patients and families want and need in a hospital room is paramount. And they did that.
Each room has a communication board so you will know who to contact with your questions. Families are also given access to their child's medical information for up to date details through the hospital's network.
The Nemours/Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children is a 200 bed Hospital located on the grounds of the Nemours Estate in Wilmington Delaware. It is a full service, acute care children's hospital. The only one of it's kind in the Delaware Valley. The completion date is set for 2014.
Highlights of this expansion of the Children's Hospital:
larger, technologically advanced single patient rooms
a new, expanded Emergency Department (from 29 to 44 bays)
family centered services, spaces, and amenities available in a peaceful, therapeutic environment with nature trails, water features, and healing gardens.
a five story atrium entrance filled with natural sunlight, recreation spaces and surrounding gardens
